eve-and-mary

Isn’t this such a captivating, interesting scene? I love this! This was painted in 2003 by a sister at the Mississippi Abbey in Iowa; it was later made into a Christmas card, and the picture went viral on the internet last year. I just happened to see it recently.

God makes a promise in Genesis after Adam and Eve sin:

And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
    and you will strike his heel.  ~ Genesis 3:15

The promise spoken about in Isaiah is fulfilled in Jesus:

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  ~ Isaiah 9:6

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means “God with us”).  ~ Matthew 1:23

Christmas Eve by Christina Rossetti

CHRISTMAS hath a darkness

Brighter than the blazing noon,

Christmas hath a chillness

Warmer than the heat of June,

Christmas hath a beauty

Lovelier than the world can show:

For Christmas bringeth Jesus,

Brought for us so low.

Earth, strike up your music,

Birds that sing and bells that ring;

Heaven hath answering music

For all Angels soon to sing:

Earth, put on your whitest

Bridal robe of spotless snow:

For Christmas bringeth Jesus,

Brought for us so low.
