Here are some verses that I’ve read and prayed in times of uncertainty, pain, and difficulty… the plight of the human condition has been the same… our sinful natures, our hearts and minds needing God… and the Psalms have some words that resonate with our humanness and have helped me give voice to some of that:
“how long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?” Ps. 13:2
“But you have seen, for you observe trouble and grief, To repay it by your hand. The helpless commits herself to you….” Ps. 10: 14
“I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears. My eye wastes away because of grief; It grows old because of all my enemies.” Psalm 6:6-7
“I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me; Because he is at my right hand I shall not be moved. “ Psalm 16:7-8
“Deliver me in your righteousness” Psalm 31: 1, and “deliver me speedily” Psalm 31: 2
He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. “ Psalm 18:16-17
He delivered me because he delighted in me.” Psalm 18:19
“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed, That I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Ps 27:13
May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your purpose.” Psalm 20: 4
“Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait I say, on the Lord.” Ps. 27:14
Give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. Ps. 119:73
All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. Psalm 38:9
“What is desired in a man is kindness”. Prov. 19:22
‘My tears have been my food day and night…” Psalm 42:3
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God. – Psalm 42:5
Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me. Psalm 42:7
By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life. — Psalm 42:8
I say to God my Rock,
“Why have you forgotten me? – Psalm 42:9
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God. – Psalm 42:11
I hope this helps you, too, dear reader. Life is full of so many uncertainties, questions, hardships, pain; even amidst the joy and hope we have in Christ, we still live in this broken world. Reading the Psalms has helped me in the past. Sometimes, I still struggle with the words- do they apply to me? I often believe God’s promises for you… but not always for me! (Just being honest). I hope these help you.
I love you, dear reader!
