I think if God didn’t design it so that we’d have to sleep… I might not. What I mean is, I have days when I’d like to keep writing, or working on a project– or whatever I’m doing, and I’d rather not stop because it is late and I need to sleep. I’d just like to keep going, without sleeping.
But eventually, I must give in to sleep.
Now don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy, appreciate, and must have a good night’s sleep, especially as I get older. Ahem. I just can’t stay up as late as I used to, in my younger days, like back in college, when it was nothing to stay up until 3 a.m. studying for an exam.
But somedays, or many evenings, I should say, I enjoy the peaceful quiet of the house, the hum of the ceiling fan, and the soft light of the lamp next to me, as my thoughts and ideas swirl around in my head. Do I really have to stop all this… and sleep?
I don’t know why, but I have been this way for a long time. I am most creative at night. Ideas come to me at night. I write best at night.
Perhaps it is out of habit. Perhaps it is the way I am wired. Perhaps when my kids are older and I have more free time in the day, this will change.
For now, this is the way it is. And I’m making do.
Yet, I wonder… if I change, will I still have time to write? As a home-educator, and a blogger who wishes to write more and upgrade my blog, is this the way to go?
I might need a new schedule.
The problem is just getting started with a new schedule. Part of me would really love to get up early, go for a workout or some type of exercise, have a quiet time, write a bit, then get on with my day. But to accomplish all that? I might need to get up at 4am! Ok, I exaggerate. At least 5 am. Ugh. That is way too early for this gal. I need a reasonable goal to begin, or this will only remain a dream after a late night writing session. 😉
I’m thinking about it. I do really love the idea of waking earlier and exercising– something my body needs.
For now, I’m enjoying summer, and sleeping in! 🙂

857. Rain, rain, rain– finally! Two days with some rain for this dry region. The grass is starting to change from yellow to some patches of green here and there.
858. Participating in a short skit at church.
859. Baking loaves of homemade bread, for the first time… with the dough mixer and grain mill. They turned out fabulous! They were delicious toasted and covered with homemade jam.
860. Swimming on Sunday afternoon.
861. A bike workout at the gym – 4 miles. It’s a start!
862. My boys are taking swimming lessons– to learn rotary breathing, strokes, how to dive the right way… I think swimming is a life skill. Thankful we have a place they can learn.
863. Thunderstorms. I do like thunderstorms, especially at night (and especially when we’ve been in need of rain).
864. Eating mangoes.
865. More fresh produce from the garden (a handful of okra, baby Taiwanese eggplant, kale, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini).
866. “The Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword…” The Word is mightier than the pen, than any other words written or spoken. The Word is alive. ALIVE! It means that when we hear the Word, it is doing something in the hearer and the speaker. It is: cleansing, restoring, convicting, comforting, teaching, directing, advising, leading, stirring, moving, piercing, saving,… The Word. It is Alive. I’d love to explore this more; this could be a whole new blog post. 🙂
867. Seeing a giant cricket in Alabama when we visited.
868. E trying to feed the rabbits in the yard… with kale from the garden.
869. Watching tree-cutters take down 5 giant pines from a neighbor’s yard. I was sad to see the big trees go, but the sight was an interesting one for us to watch.
870. Slowly cleaning and decluttering.
I’m a morning person. Since high school my alarm has been set at 5. Some seasons even earlier. My sister is a night owl musician. That sometimes makes fun times together challenging. 🙂
Did you see the Ann Voskamp interview about her writing process? Late nights and short sleep were the price of her book.

Oh, yes! I am a total night owl and I do almost all of my writing at night. I also home educate my kids and I know an earlier morning would probably help with our routine etc, but I just can’t seem to give up my solitude at night, when the house is asleep and I can just let my fingers go on the keyboard. It seems that almost every writer I talk to wakes at 5 to write and I tried for a few months and my writing was gibberish, even with earlier evenings. Seriously bad, with absolutely no coherent thought. So, I’m stuck with late nights, I say, as I type this at 1 am. 😉
